How to Get Teacher Registration in Queensland

Thinking about teaching in Queensland? Here's everything you need to know about getting registered with the Queensland College of Teachers.

Getting registered to teach in Queensland is more straightforward than most people expect, but there are a few steps you need to work through before you can set foot in a classroom. Whether you're a newly graduated teacher or moving from another state or country, this guide walks you through exactly what's involved.

The Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) is the body that handles all teacher registration in the state. You'll need to apply through them directly, and the process starts on their website. Before you apply, make sure you have your teaching qualification documents ready, along with your identity documents and any additional paperwork relevant to your situation.

If you trained in Australia, the process is fairly simple. You'll submit your qualifications, pay the registration fee, and the QCT will assess whether your degree meets the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Most Australian-trained teachers are approved within a few weeks.

If you trained overseas, there's an extra step. The QCT will assess your qualifications against Australian standards, and depending on where you trained, you may need to complete some additional study or supervised teaching hours. Teachers from the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa tend to have a smoother process as their qualifications are generally well recognised.

One thing worth knowing is that you can apply for provisional registration while your full application is being assessed. This lets you work in Queensland classrooms while the paperwork is being processed, which is useful if you've already lined up a role.

Registration costs around $200 for the initial application and needs to be renewed annually. It's worth setting a reminder so you don't accidentally let it lapse.

Once you're registered, you're good to work in any Queensland school — state, Catholic or independent. If you're looking for your first role, TeachAU lists teaching jobs across Brisbane and the rest of Queensland, and it's completely free to register.
